Watch: Foundation Tutorials for Every Style Below
🎀 French Braid — Powers Braided Updo & Crown Styles
This is the foundation technique for Styles 1, 2, 4, and 6 below. Learn this first — the rest follows easily.
💜 Dutch Braid — For the Crown & Statement Braid Styles
The Dutch braid's raised ridge looks more formal and dramatic than a French braid at the same length — perfect for weddings.
The Bridesmaid DIY Golden Rule
Practice the style at least twice before the wedding day. Not once — twice. The first practice reveals the technique gaps. The second practice reveals what additional tools or products you need. Do a third practice on day-two hair (unwashed, with texture) because that's what you'll actually be working with on the morning of the wedding. A style you've done three times goes in smoothly in 15 minutes; one you've done once takes 45 minutes and comes out looking like it.
DIY Bridesmaid Styles by Hair Length
Long Hair (Collarbone and Below)
- 1French Braid into Romantic Low ChignonFrench braid from the crown down, incorporating all scalp hair to the nape, then coil the remaining length into a soft low bun secured with criss-crossed bobby pins. Pull a few face-framing pieces loose at the temples and apply flexible-hold spray. This is one of the most photogenic bridesmaid styles available — structured braid on top, romantic softness at the nape. Requires: French braid technique (tutorial above), 10–12 bobby pins, 1 elastic, hairspray. Practice time needed: 2 sessions.
- 2Dutch Crown Braid with Loose EndsDutch braid from one temple across the top of the head to the other, pinning behind the opposite ear. Leave all remaining hair loose and wave it with a 1.25" curling wand. The contrast between the raised, geometric Dutch braid crown and the loose, romantic waves below is one of the most beautiful bridesmaid combinations possible — and it reads as far more complicated than it actually is. Requires: Dutch braid technique, bobby pins, curling wand, hairspray. Practice time: 2–3 sessions.
- 3Romantic Half-Up Twist with Floral PinTake the top third of hair, create small rope twists from each temple, bring both twists to meet at the center back crown, and secure with a decorative pin or floral accessory. Leave the rest in loose waves. The rope twists are easier than they look — each is just two sections twisted around each other — and the floral pin does the styling work. Requires: two sections, twisting motion, bobby pins, one decorative accessory. Practice time: 1 session.
- 4Side French Braid into Low PonytailSweep all hair to one side. French braid from the hairline near the ear, picking up hair from the top of the head as you angle diagonally downward. When you reach the nape area, continue as a regular braid and secure with an elastic. The diagonal braid creates an elegant sweep that photographs beautifully in profile — which is a significant percentage of wedding candid photos. Secure with a wrapped piece of hair over the elastic. Practice time: 2 sessions.
Medium Hair (Chin to Shoulder)
- 5Braided Half-Up with Statement ClipTake the top section of hair and create a small French or Dutch braid at the crown, pulling it back to the center and securing with a decorative clip or pearl pin. Leave the rest in waves. For medium hair that's too short for a full updo, this style hits the balance between deliberately styled and effortlessly romantic. The clip does the decorative work — choose one that coordinates with the wedding's color palette. Practice time: 1 session.
- 6Mini French Braid Headband + Textured WavesBraid a small French braid along one temple, sweeping it from one side of the hairline toward the other like a headband. Pin behind the opposite ear with bobby pins. Leave the remaining hair in textured waves using a curling wand or overnight braiding method. The braid headband effect works from shoulder length and shorter, looks intricate while being achievable, and photographs beautifully when there's a veil involved (the braid provides anchor points for pins). Practice time: 1–2 sessions.
Short Hair (Bob & Pixie)
- 7Polished Bob with Pearl or Jeweled ClipBlow-dry completely smooth, apply a small amount of shine serum to the ends, and place a statement clip — pearl barrette, crystal clip, or vintage-style hair comb — at the temple or tucked behind the ear. The statement clip transforms a regular blow-dry into a wedding-appropriate style in 60 seconds. Choose a clip that coordinates with the bridesmaid dress or the wedding color scheme. Practice time: 0 sessions — requires only a good blow-dry.
- 8Defined Pixie with Floral or Vintage PinApply a light-hold pomade and define the top pieces with fingertips — forward and to one side, with deliberate definition that reads as styled rather than casual. Place a small floral hairpin, vintage clip, or pearl bobby pin at the temple. On a pixie, accessories become the style rather than additions to it — a well-chosen single pin turns a casual pixie into something unmistakably bridal-party appropriate. Practice time: 1 session.
Day-Of Timeline: Working Backwards from the Wedding
| Time before ceremony | Action |
|---|---|
| Night before | Apply dry shampoo to roots, sleep on it — this is the best prep step for all-day hold |
| 2.5 hours before | Wash (if needed), apply heat protectant, blow-dry with root-lifting mousse |
| 1.5 hours before | Style — braid, updo, or waves. Do not rush this step |
| 1 hour before | Two passes of flexible-hold spray, 14 inches away. Place all accessories |
| 30 minutes before | Final check: back of head in a handheld mirror, any loose pins reinforced |
| Pack in your bag | 6–8 matching bobby pins, 1 elastic, travel hairspray, your statement clip (in case) |
Products That Make DIY Bridesmaid Hair Last
- ✓Dry shampoo (used the night before): The most underused bridesmaid hair trick — applied before sleep, absorbed overnight, and provides all-day grip and volume for any style
- ✓Criss-cross bobby pins in your hair color: Two pins in an X pattern hold three times as much as a single straight pin. Buy a pack in your color and use generously — visible pins are worse than slightly over-pinned styles
- ✓Flexible-hold (not stiff-hold) hairspray: For braided and updo styles, flexible hold maintains the style without stiffness. Stiff-hold spray is only needed for very sleek styles that need to resist humidity
- ✓Shine serum (for bobs and waves, ends only): A drop the size of a dime through mid-lengths and ends before styling adds the polished finish that separates DIY that looks professional from DIY that looks homemade
