Easy Updos for Every Hair Type

Prom and graduation are two of the few occasions in a year where your hairstyle genuinely matters — photos last forever, you'll be photographed from every angle, and the style needs to hold for 6+ hours of dancing, hugging, and an after-party. These are RaDona's recommendations organized by hair type and time available, so you can find the right style and know exactly how to execute it.

The Prom Hair Rule: What Photographs vs. What Looks Good in Person
Updos, half-up styles, and braids photograph better than flowing-down styles in 90% of cases. Down hair moves, catches shadows, and disappears into dark backgrounds. Structured updos show their shape in every photo. If you're torn between a style you love in person and one that photographs better — do the updo. You'll be glad when the photos come back. That said, long loose waves with texture are the exception: they photograph beautifully when done right. See style #4 below.

By Hair Type: Your Best Prom & Graduation Options

Long Hair (Shoulder or Below)

  1. 1
    Romantic Low Chignon
Gather hair at the nape, twist into a loose bun, and secure with bobby pins placed in a criss-cross pattern for maximum hold. Pull a few face-framing pieces loose at the temples. Leave the texture slightly imperfect — the best prom updos look deliberately undone rather than corporate-tight. Spritz with flexible-hold hairspray and pin any pieces that move. This style photographs beautifully from every angle, holds for 8+ hours, and works with every dress neckline.

  2. 2
Dutch Braid Crown + Flowing Ends
Dutch braid from one temple across the top of the head to the other, pinning the end behind the opposite ear. Leave all the remaining hair loose and wave it with a curling wand. This gives you the structured, photogenic top with the movement and volume of loose hair — the best of both worlds. Use the Dutch braid tutorial to master the technique beforehand.

  3. 3
French Braid Into a Low Bun
French braid from the crown down the back, continue the braid the entire length, then coil the end into a low bun at the nape and secure. This uses the French braid technique as a foundation but gives you the elegance of an updo at the end. Very secure, very photogenic, requires no heat tools.

  4. 4
    Glamorous Loose Waves
Section hair and curl each section around a 1.25" wand, wrapping away from the face, holding for 8 seconds, and releasing without touching. Let every curl cool completely before touching — this is the step most people skip and it's why their waves fall out by 9pm. Once all curls are cool, run fingers through gently to break them into waves. Finish with medium-hold hairspray and add a decorative clip or hair vine for prom. Holds all night when done correctly.

Medium Hair (Chin to Shoulder)

  1. 5
    Half-Up Twist with Braided Detail
Take the top third of hair, create a small Dutch braid or rope twist at the temples on each side, bring them back and secure together at the crown with a decorative clip or pins. Leave the rest loose and waved. This style works from as short as chin-length and looks stunning from the front — which is usually the angle in 70% of prom photos.

  2. 6
Sleek Low Ponytail with Wrapped Base
Blow-dry completely smooth, gather at the nape in a low ponytail, secure, then wrap a small section of hair around the elastic and pin underneath. Spritz with shine spray. For medium-length hair that doesn't have enough volume for a full updo, this is the most polished option — it looks intentional, photographs well, and holds without any product in the ponytail itself.

Short Hair (Bob & Pixie)

  1. 7
    Glossy Polished Bob with Accessories
Blow-dry completely smooth with a round brush, apply a small amount of smoothing serum to the ends for shine, then add a statement accessory — a pearl-encrusted clip at the temple, a vintage-style barrette, or a delicate hair vine woven through the bob. Short hair at prom often photographs better than long hair because there's nothing to compete with the face.

  2. 8
    Textured Pixie with Defined Pieces
For pixie cuts at prom: apply a light-hold pomade and define the top pieces with your fingers into a deliberate pattern — forward and to one side, or in soft, separated layers. The definition is what makes a pixie look intentional at a formal event rather than just "short." A decorative headband or single statement earrings complete the look.

How to Make Prom Hair Last All Night

  1. 1
    Start with day-two hair
Freshly washed hair is too slippery for updos and too fine for good curl hold. Wash the night before. Day-two hair has natural texture that grips pins, holds braids, and keeps curls intact far longer.
  2. 2
    Apply texturizing spray before styling
One pass of a light texturizing spray through mid-lengths before starting gives every style — updo, braid, or waves — something to hold onto. Skip this step and you'll be repinning by the second hour.
  3. 3
    Use criss-cross bobby pins
When pinning sections of an updo, cross two bobby pins in an X over each other rather than using one straight pin. Two crossed pins hold three times as much hair as one and won't slip during dancing.
  4. 4
    Finish with a strong-hold spray — held 12" away
Hold the can at arm's length and spritz in slow, sweeping arcs rather than concentrating on one spot. This creates an even, invisible hold rather than stiff, wet-looking spots. Repeat once more 5 minutes later after the first coat dries.
  5. 5
    Do a 2-hour rehearsal beforehand
Style your hair exactly as you plan to for prom, then do something active for 2 hours. Dance, jump around, go outside. You'll see exactly what holds and what needs reinforcing before the actual night. This one step prevents 95% of prom hair disasters.
