Quick Hairstyles for Little Girls:
12 Styles in 10 Minutes or Less

RL
RaDona Ludlow, Licensed Cosmetologist
Ages 2–12
All hair types
Timed & step-by-step

School mornings have approximately three minutes of cooperative hair time before someone loses a shoe, spills their juice, or simply decides they're done. These 12 styles are organized by exactly how long they take — from a 90-second twist that works on even the shortest attention spans, to a 10-minute French braid that stays in all day through PE, lunch, and everything after. Every style here has been tested in RaDona's Utah salon and on real mornings with real kids.

Watch: RaDona's Foundation Tutorials

Several styles below use French or Dutch braid technique as a foundation. Watch these first if you're learning — even 10 minutes with the tutorial will make every braid style on this page significantly easier.

🎀 French Braid Tutorial — Powers Styles 10, 11 & 12
Master this once and styles 10, 11, and 12 become easy 8-minute morning routines. Full written guide: French Braid Tutorial page.
💜 Dutch Braid Tutorial — The Raised Braid Variation
The Dutch braid sits raised on top of the hair — looks more dramatic and holds even better than a French braid for active kids. Full guide: Dutch Braid Tutorial page.
The One Thing That Makes Every Morning Style Faster
Day-two hair (unwashed) styles significantly faster than freshly washed hair. Clean, silky hair slips out of elastics, doesn't hold braids, and creates flyaways constantly. A small spritz of water and a pea-sized amount of detangling cream on slightly-day-old hair gives you the grip and manageability that makes every style on this list achievable in the times listed. If you must wash in the morning, a light texturizing spray before styling makes a noticeable difference.

These three styles exist for the mornings that derailed before they started. They work on every hair length, they take less time than tying a shoe, and they still look intentional.

1
The Twist-Under Half-Up
⏱️ 90 seconds · All hair lengths · All ages

Take the top half of the hair, split it into two sections, twist each section outward, cross them over each other at the back, and secure with a single elastic or clip. It looks like a style. It took 90 seconds. This is the one to memorise first.

  1. 1Gather the top section from temple to temple — everything above a natural horizontal line across the head
  2. 2Split into two equal halves; twist each section away from the face (outward) two or three turns
  3. 3Cross the two twisted sections over each other at the centre back and secure with an elastic or decorative clip
  4. 4Leave the rest down, or pull it into a ponytail — both look intentional
90 seconds All lengths Ages 2+
2
Simple High Ponytail
⏱️ 60 seconds · Medium–long hair · Ages 3+

Not as boring as it sounds when done right. The height of the ponytail changes the entire look — high and centred is energetic, low and centred is classic, off-centre is playful. The upgrade that takes 10 extra seconds: wrap a small piece of hair around the elastic and pin underneath. It looks like three times the effort.

  1. 1Brush or finger-comb all hair smooth, gathering in the direction of your chosen ponytail position
  2. 2Secure with an elastic — hold it with one hand, wrap with the other, pass through twice
  3. 3Upgrade (10 extra seconds): Pull a small strand from the underside of the ponytail, wrap it around the elastic clockwise, and pin the end underneath with a bobby pin. The elastic disappears.

3
Two Pigtail Ponytails
⏱️ 90 seconds · All hair lengths · Ages 2–8

Classic for a reason — symmetrical pigtails keep all the hair controlled through the most active day without anything coming loose. The key is the centred part; everything else is just a ponytail done twice.

  1. 1Draw a straight centre part from forehead to nape using a comb
  2. 2Clip one side, gather the other into a ponytail at the preferred height, secure with elastic
  3. 3Repeat on the second side, matching position and tightness
  4. 4Add a bow or ribbon to each if the occasion calls for it — takes 20 extra seconds per side
90 seconds All lengths Ages 2–8
⏱️ Under 5 Minutes

Five minutes is the school morning sweet spot — enough time to do something that looks genuinely polished, not so long that it becomes a battle. These five styles are the ones RaDona recommends parents learn first.

4
Bow-Tie Messy Bun
⏱️ 3–4 minutes · Medium–long hair · Ages 4+

A half-up bun that's looped and split to create a bow shape from the hair itself — no bow accessory needed. RaDona features this one as a signature quick style because it looks like a special occasion hairdo in under 5 minutes. Leave the remaining hair down or in loose waves.

  1. 1Gather the top section into a high ponytail; on the last wrap of the elastic, pull the hair only halfway through to create a loop
  2. 2Split the loop into two equal halves — these are the bow wings
  3. 3Take the remaining hanging tail, bring it up over the centre between the two wings, pull down firmly, and pin underneath — this is the knot of the bow
  4. 4Adjust each wing to equal size, pin flat underneath, and finish with a single pass of hairspray
3–4 minutes RaDona favourite Ages 4+
5
Braided Pigtails (Simple 3-Strand)
⏱️ 3–4 minutes · All hair lengths · Ages 3+

Two pigtail ponytails braided all the way down — one of the most secure styles for active kids. They survive PE, recess, gymnastics, and sport without coming loose. Once practised, the two braids can be done in three minutes flat.

  1. 1Create a straight centred part; clip one side out of the way
  2. 2Gather the working side into a low ponytail, divide into three equal sections, braid all the way to the ends, secure with an elastic
  3. 3Repeat on the second side — use the first braid as your length and tension reference
  4. 4Optional: gently pull each loop outward (pancaking) for a fuller, richer-looking braid
3–4 minutes All-day hold Ages 3+
6
Twisted Rope Ponytail
⏱️ 2–3 minutes · Medium–long hair · Ages 4+

A twisted ponytail that looks far more complex than it is — gather all hair into a ponytail, split the ponytail into two sections, twist each section in the same direction, then wrap them around each other in the opposite direction. The counter-tension locks the twist in place.

  1. 1Gather all hair into a high or mid ponytail and secure with an elastic
  2. 2Divide the ponytail into two equal sections; twist each section clockwise between your fingers
  3. 3Wrap the two twisted sections around each other in the opposite direction (counter-clockwise)
  4. 4Secure the end with a second elastic — the counter-twist tension holds without pins or spray
2–3 minutes No braid needed Ages 4+
7
Double Dutch Braid into One Ponytail
⏱️ 4–5 minutes (once learned) · Long hair · Ages 5+

Two Dutch braids running from the front temples down the back of the head, joined at the nape into a single low ponytail. This style is on the original page as a 5-minute hairdo — and once you've practised the Dutch braid technique, it genuinely is. The Dutch braid tutorial above walks through the exact under-crossing technique.

  1. 1Part hair down the centre; clip one side out of the way
  2. 2Dutch braid from the temple downward, incorporating scalp hair with each pass (sections go under rather than over) — continue to the nape and clip temporarily
  3. 3Repeat on the second side, bringing the second braid to meet the first at the nape
  4. 4Join both braids into a low ponytail with a single elastic — the two raised Dutch braids running over the head look stunning from behind
4–5 minutes Impressive finish Long hair
8
Bubble Ponytail
⏱️ 3–4 minutes · Long hair · Ages 4+

A ponytail with multiple elastics spaced down the length, with the sections gently puffed out between each elastic to create "bubble" sections. One of the most popular styles on social media for young girls — and genuinely one of the easiest, because every elastic takes 15 seconds and the puffing takes 10.

  1. 1Secure a high ponytail as the starting point with one elastic
  2. 2About 2 inches down the ponytail, add a second elastic — then a third, and a fourth, spacing them evenly down to the ends
  3. 3Between each pair of elastics, gently pull the hair outward on both sides to puff the section — this creates the bubble shape
  4. 4Use matching coloured elastics for a coordinated look, or mix colours for a playful finish

When the morning has a few extra minutes — a weekend, a special occasion, or a school photo day — these four styles reward the extra time with results that look genuinely impressive.

9
Half-Up Space Buns
⏱️ 5–7 minutes · All hair lengths · Ages 4–12

Two small buns created from just the top half of the hair, with the rest left down. Playful and expressive — consistently one of the most-requested styles from girls ages 6–10 who have seen it on friends or in media. Two mini classic buns, done simultaneously on each side, takes about 6 minutes once the motion is familiar.

  1. 1Part hair down the centre from forehead to crown
  2. 2Gather just the top section on one side into a small high ponytail; pull the hair halfway through on the last elastic wrap to form a loop
  3. 3Fan the loop into a round bun shape and secure with bobby pins; repeat on the other side
  4. 4Leave the remaining hair completely loose — or add loose waves if time allows

10
French Braid Headband
⏱️ 6–8 minutes · Medium–long hair · Ages 4+

A thin French braid running along one side of the hairline — from one temple across the top to behind the other ear — creating a braid headband effect with no accessory needed. Leave the remaining hair down, in a ponytail, or in waves. Learn the French braid (tutorial above) first — once you have it, this style takes 7 minutes.

  1. 1Start at one temple with a small section of hair near the hairline
  2. 2French braid across the head, picking up only thin sections from the hairline edge as you cross each section — keep the braid narrow and close to the hairline
  3. 3When you reach behind the opposite ear, secure with bobby pins — tuck the end of the braid out of sight
  4. 4Style the remaining hair however works for the day — the braid headband works with everything
6–8 minutes French braid needed Looks incredible
11
Crown Braid (Simple Version)
⏱️ 8–10 minutes · Long hair · Ages 5+

A French braid that circles the entire head — starting at one temple, braiding all the way around, and pinning at the other temple. Creates a princess-crown effect that works for recitals, school photos, and special occasions. Once the French braid is learned, this is an 8-minute style.

  1. 1Begin at one temple; French braid backward around the head, picking up sections from the lower section of hair with each pass
  2. 2Continue all the way around the head, keeping the braid close to the hairline — it should follow the natural crown line of the head
  3. 3When you reach the starting point, continue as a regular braid for 1–2 more inches, tuck the end under the braid at the temple, and secure with bobby pins
  4. 4Gently pancake the braid for width, add a small floral pin or leave plain
8–10 minutes Special occasions Long hair
12
French Braid into Messy Bun
⏱️ 8–10 minutes · Medium–long hair · Ages 5+

French braid from the crown all the way down, incorporating all scalp hair, then coil the remaining length into a soft low bun at the nape and pin. The braid anchors the top section completely — no slipping, no flyaways at the front — while the bun controls the length. This is the style that stays in perfectly through a full school day including sport.

  1. 1French braid from the crown, picking up all scalp hair as you move downward toward the nape
  2. 2Once all scalp hair is incorporated, secure with a temporary elastic at the nape and continue as a regular braid for 2–3 more inches
  3. 3Coil the braid and any remaining loose length into a low bun at the nape; pin with 8–10 criss-crossed bobby pins
  4. 4Pancake the braid gently for width; one light pass of hairspray to finish
8–10 minutes All-day hold Medium–long

What to Keep on Hand for School Mornings

  • Spiral or fabric-covered hair elastics (multipack): Regular rubber elastics snap and crease hair. Spirals hold just as firmly without damage — and for the bubble ponytail, you'll need 4–5 per style
  • Texturizing spray: The single most useful product for morning hair. Spritzed on dry or slightly damp hair before any style, it gives sections the grip to hold braids, twists, and buns significantly longer
  • Detangling spray or leave-in conditioner: A spritz on dry hair before brushing prevents the morning battle with knots — especially important for kids with thick or curly hair
  • Bobby pins in hair colour (100-pack): Always buy more than you think you need. They disappear. Crossed in an X, they hold three times as much as a single straight pin
  • Light-hold flexible hairspray: One pass from 14 inches away after any style to seal flyaways. Flexible hold — not strong hold — so the hair still looks natural
