How To French Braid Your Own Hair

French Braid Your Own Hair – We had a request to show how to do a braid on yourself. French braiding can be a twisted mess of fingers and hair even when you are braiding someone else’s hair, so in this video, we try to help with the tangles and confusion as we demonstrate on ourselves how to do a braid. We chose a single braid down the back because we figured if you can learn to braid your hair when you can’t see what you’re doing, it will be easier to French braid it in the front where you can see what you’re doing.

Read on for an in-depth, step-by-step guide on how to French braid your own hair and unlock your inner hairstylist.

Preparation is key

Before you begin the actual braiding process, it’s essential to prepare your hair to make the task easier and to ensure a flawless outcome. Make sure your hair is clean and dry, as slightly dirty or damp hair can be more challenging to work with. Brush through your hair to remove any knots or tangles, and consider using a little dry shampoo or texturizing spray to give your locks some extra grip.

Section your hair

Start by grabbing a small section of hair from the top-center portion of your head. Divide this section into three equal strands – left, middle, and right. The key to getting your French braid looking perfect lies in maintaining the right amount of tension between these strands.

Begin the braiding

Hold the right strand in your right hand and the left strand in your left hand, leaving the middle strand hanging loose. Cross the right strand over the middle strand, so it now becomes the middle strand. Then, cross the left strand over the new middle strand, so it now takes the middle position. This basic braiding technique forms the foundation of your French braid.

Incorporating additional hair

As you continue the braiding process down the back of your head, you’ll start incorporating more hair into the braid. Take a small section of hair from the right side of your head and add it to the right strand before crossing it over the middle strand again. Repeat this step on the left side by picking up a small section of hair, adding it to the left strand, and crossing it over the middle strand.

Remember to maintain even tension throughout the braiding process and pull the hair gently but firmly to create a neat and tight braid.

Finish the braid

As you reach the lower part of your head, and all your hair is included in the braid, you’ll no longer be able to add any more hair. Simply continue with the standard braiding technique until you reach the end of your hair. Secure the braid with a small hair tie or an elastic band, and you’re all set!

For an extra touch of style, you can also opt to pull out small sections of your braid, making it appear thicker and more voluminous – just make sure not to overdo it and undo your hard work.

Conclusion
